I don’t really know how I feel at the moment. Probably sad. Today three rescue puppies died and I learned that two people (who I had never met, but knew of) have relapsed. Puppies I never met and people I never met and probably never will. But still it’s crushing.
One of these people is a boy just turned eight. In less than two years he has survived aml twice but less than 100 days into a bmt they’ve found tumors in his jaw bone and the prognosis is terminal. The other is a college student like myself with nhl and if her procedure is not a success (it has only a 50% chance) than that’s it and there’s nothing more they can do. And when I walk into the bathroom there are girls chatting about their sororities and pointless things and I just don’t understand how they can be so carefree when there’s an eight year old boy with so many hopes and dreams whose going to die and someone our age who might die too.
Death is that which completes us. It’s the only thing we know for certain will happen and yet we do not know when it will happen. I just find it so cruel that young people must try to make the most of their last days knowing that it will be soon. You and I could die tomorrow but we could live a hundred more years. Knowing that you will die soon, we don’t know what that feels like.
So many of my peers are pre med but I can count on my hand how many of them want to be doctors because they’re passionate about medicine and helping people. The others… there are so many of them who only care about success and money. And I want to shake them and slap them in the face. Of course doctors are wonderful but med schools receive so many applications and reject so many. Why, why don’t you live your lives loving what you love? Why waste your time with something you don’t love for a future you don’t know you’ll have. I don’t know who said it but someone said “dream like you’ll live forever and live like you’ll die tomorrow”. I don’t know why people these days don’t listen to that.
I don’t think children with cancer are stronger in spirit and that’s why they get it. Children are strong in spirit and they haven’t been taught to suffocate their dreams yet. And when they’re told they’ll die, or that they might die, even if they don’t understand the full morbidity of death, they make the most of life because they know it’s precious.
It makes me mad that people don’t see how precious life is. How they waste it doing things they hate. They don’t dream and the live like they’ll live forever. Death is that which completes us. “There is only one god and his name is Death. And there is only one thing we say to Death: Not today.” We live our entire lives fighting death, which in the end will catch up with us. Death will win the race, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy the race. We shouldn’t let society stifle us. We should be happy. We should live.

I am a Christian, and I actually think that the theory of evolution doesn’t contradict what’s in the Bible.
I know plenty of devout Christians who agree :) By no means do I wish to attack Christians or any faith or lack of faith. Simply people who do not accept evolution with nothing to support their claims (because there really doesn’t exist anything to). My own faith, or lack of, has no place on this corner of the internet, but I realize it does for many.

Evolution is taught in nearly every school throughout the country. It’s accepted as fact by scientist, teachers, and, consequently, students. But do we ever stop to think of the validity of what we’re claiming as true? Do we accept evolution because everyone does, or can we actually prove its truth? Where is the evidence to back up this “truth”? If there are no examples of evolution, why is it taken as fact?
I recently watched a documentary where some bystanders were being interviewed. When asked whether they would save their neighbor or their dog if both were drowning, every person interviewed said that they would save their dog. After all, they said, man is just a specialized primate. Is human life not sacred, then? Are we no better than dogs? We shouldn’t be surprised, then, when evils, such as rape, take place on a regular basis. Human life ought to be valuable. We are not just animals.
To put it simply, you are full of shit. Quite a lot of it too.
Are you a scientist? Specifically a scientist who studies evolutionary biology? I don’t know you, but I’m quite confident you are not.
One does not “believe” in evolution in the manner that one believes in a supreme being, be they Krishna, Allah, Thor or the Christian God. Either you accept it or you do not, but you are being quite ignorant to not accept it when there is a plethora of physical evidence for evolution. Do you accept Plate Tectonic Theory? The Periodic Table? A Heliocentric Solar System? Or do you propose that humorism is how we ought to conduct medicine still and that the earth is a flat table with angels pushing the celestial objects through the sky?
Science is all about asking questions but nothing that scientists have found leads them toward a creationist view of the earth’s history. In the early 1800s scientists in fact refused to explore the clues that led toward evolution until Darwin and Wallace.
The evidence we have for evolution could not begin to fill the Library of Alexandria. You might want to actually read up on some of this before you claim there is no proof. I suggest starting here. Then, please, do tell us about how there are no examples that support evolution.
This documentary, does it have a name? Making people choose between their neighbor and their dog is revolting. Do you go around asking people if they’d save their mother or their wife? No. That’s disgusting. Do you have a dog or some sort of pet? Well I love my dog dearly and I really cannot fathom being made to chose between my neighbor and my dog.
Isn’t all life sacred? If, as it says in Genesis 1 & 2, the Abrahamic God created everything, then is it not all sacred? Is it ok to kill living beings for the mere pleasure of watching them die because they are not human and humans are “superior”? I would say that you are sick person.
Homo sapiens belong to the order “primates” but this does not make them monkeys. It simply means that we have a common ancestor, which at some point diverged. Evolution is like a very twisty, many-branched tree. Ever since life on earth began, different species have been branching off and diverging. If humans think like you do, then it’s an insult to monkeys and apes that we are related at all.
What does evolution have to do with rape? Do you have some sort of statistical data to show that rapists are unproportionately accepting of evolution?
No where does evolution propose that human life is not valuable. Is it not marvelous that humans came to be in a world full of chance? Or, if you let a supreme guide your life, is it not amazing that they created humans in the midst of everything else?
People reject evolution because they are afraid. They fear that it will destroy their holy houses, their scriptures, their communities. But plenty of theologians have had no difficulty accepting it. They say themselves that it gives the stories of creation more meaning because it is not a fact book, but a deep well of knowledge that takes great thought and care to unravel its message.
Well, there you have it. Maybe now you’ll use that wonderful brain that your god gave you. Or maybe you won’t, but that’s your loss, not mine.
I’ve seen somewhere here some post urging people to educate themselves on differences between Japan and USA/Europe, saying that “over 98 percent of Japan is Japanese, so they don’t have diversity problem”
Which is hilarious on so many counts. Data they quote is about nationality, not ancestry. There is ethnic diverstiy in Japan - Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans, Ryukyuan, Ainu, Brazilians - this claim is so silly and poorly researched so it begs the question, why OP didn’t apply their own approach to their post?
I really don’t know as I’ve never stepped foot in Japan or researched this subject on more than a casual basis. It does seem rather obvious that in comparison to, say, the US and China (which are very diverse, although certain regions may not be), Japan is quite homogenous.
Most Brazilians living in Japan are ethnically Japanese. Ryukyuan and Ainu are native to the Japanese islands, although their distinct cultural/ethnic identity is often ignored by the Yamato Japanese majority in favor of a “one people, one culture” identity. From what I’ve heard from those who have travelled to Japan (people who are of a non-Asian background from the US) is that they become very noticeable.
So while Japan does have it’s own diversity, white Americans and Europeans are not going to escape their own identity when they enter the country. A lot of people do have a very idealized view of Japan and think that, even though they’ve never left their own country, they’ll be able to walk into Japan and suddenly become Japanese. They have their own social issues and history which fetishizing weeaboos ought to take the time to research.
